AI is getting smarter – But are Humans getting wiser? We are building machines that can generate knowledge, answer questions, solve problems and increasingly act on our behalf. Yet the questions that will define our future remain profoundly human: What is worth doing? Who benefits? Who decides? And what kind of world are we actually trying to create? Our AI-fuelled future could be Heaven or Hell #hellven – depending on our choices.
In this GerdTalks conversation, I join my friend and fellow futurist William “Bill” Halal to explore his new book, One World: The Digital Revolution and the Rise of Global Consciousness. Bill argues that the digital revolution is pushing humanity towards a new stage of development: an age in which values, beliefs, imagination and purpose become increasingly important. Yet, as machines handle more of what we can calculate and automate, we must take greater responsibility for everything that requires human judgement. His proposition is provocative: today’s turmoil could be the difficult adolescence of a civilization learning to grow up.
But growing up is hardly guaranteed. I challenge Bill’s optimism with the question at the heart of my work on the AI Emergency: can we develop the wisdom, institutions and collective will to govern these technologies before their power overwhelms our ability to manage them? When autonomous AI agents can influence financial systems, critical infrastructure and decisions affecting millions of people, good intentions are insufficient. We need accountability, rules and meaningful limits and a clear understanding of which decisions must remain human.
In this talk, we also explore the crucial distinction between intelligence and consciousness. Solving a problem is different from understanding why it matters. Knowledge is not agency. Facts ≠ Feelings. An AI simulating empathy raises huge questions. Producing an answer does not confer the moral authority to act on it. When we confuse machine capabilities with human qualities, we risk handing over responsibilities that we have barely begun to examine. The more capable our tools become, the more essential our ethics, foresight and sense of purpose become.
That brings us to economics—and the incentives shaping our future. If the overriding goal is higher profits, greater efficiency and market domination, those priorities will define what AI delivers: Show me the Incentive and I’ll show you the Outcome.
A better outcome requires a broader ambition: People, Planet, Purpose, Peace and Prosperity. Bill makes the case for businesses that work with employees, customers and communities to create shared value. We discuss whether this approach can become a competitive advantage—and what it would take to move beyond treating human wellbeing as an afterthought.
Our conversation reaches beyond AI to the fractured global order, the future of Europe, the role of the United Nations and the urgent need for cooperation on technologies that cross every border. Global consciousness, as we discuss it here, means recognizing our interdependence and acting on it. Shared threats demand institutions capable of finding shared solutions.
